Sport in Portland

The city of Portland, Oregon, has a long history in sports and hosts a wide variety of teams and competitions today.

Numerous professional sports teams call the city home, including the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer (MLS), the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the Portland Thorns FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

The Portland Trail Blazers, sometimes known as the “Blazers,” are a familiar sight in the city and have a devoted following. The franchise has reached the NBA Finals three times, winning the championship in 1977, and has made the playoffs in 35 of its 53 seasons. The Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League reside at the Moda Center, where the Blazers play their home games (WHL).

Portland has a strong soccer culture, and the Portland Timbers have competed in Major League Soccer since 2011.The “Timbers Army,” a devoted group of Timbers supporters, is well-known for their fervent support and intricate game-day customs.

In addition to winning the MLS Cup in 2015 and making appearances in the Western Conference Finals in 2013 and 2018, the Timbers have enjoyed success in MLS. Providence Park is the team’s home venue. Portland is home to a variety of college sports teams, notably the University of Portland Pilots and Portland State University Vikings, in addition to its professional sports clubs.

A variety of yearly sporting events are also held in Portland, including the Portland Marathon, Portland Triathlon, and Portland Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. The city is also home to a number of golf courses and is a well-liked riding destination due to the abundance of trails and road cycling routes nearby.

Portland has something for any sports lover with its wide range of sports teams and events.
